About BNCAP
The Indian New Car Assessment Program, more commonly referred to as BNCAP, is India’s independent voice on vehicle safety.
We crash test cars and conduct performance assessments on safety features and technologies then publish a simple star rating to indicate relative safety performance.

Vehicle Safety Standards
Our Safety Evaluation Scope
Bharat New Car Assessment Program will be applicable to the vehicles of category M1 with GVW up to 3500 kg.
BNCAP rating will provide consumers an indication of the level of protection offered to the occupant/s by evaluating the vehicle in the following areas:
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)
AOP focuses on minimizing adult injuries in crashes through seat belts, airbags, and structural safety.
Child Occupant Protection (COP)
COP ensures children's safety via effective use of car seats and booster seats in vehicles.
Safety Assist Technologies (SAT)
SAT comprises technologies like automatic braking and lane assistance to prevent accidents and enhance safety.

The Bharat NCAP is a rating-based safety assessment of Indian cars based on various parameters. It is aligned with global benchmark testing protocols.
The program is voluntary in nature & above the regulatory requirements.
Since safety standards may differ in different parts of the world, there is a need to assess occupant protection based on NCAP requirement in the region.
Though a car model had been evaluated in other NCAP program in the world and scored a good rating, it will not necessarily mean that the car will perform as good in Bharat NCAP due to the manufacturing origin and quality. Some car models are developed with minimum safety specifications for certain market due to less demand on best safety performance.
Moreover, the adoption of the technological advancements in the vehicular safety will be easier to implement with Bharat NCAP as & when required ahead of developing & implementing the regulation. As a result, Indian consumers will have access to a wide range of vehicles that will significantly exceed the minimum regulatory standards.
Since the program in consumer centric, the Bharat NCAP rating will speak of the safety level awarded by the car to the consumer. A consumer can make choice based on the safety aspects & the safety technologies installed in a car which can offer best safety in his day-to-day usage. Some car models are developed with minimum safety specifications for certain market due to less demand on best safety performance.
Set of standards applicable for the vehicles before going on-road is for the “minimum” regulatory requirements for the particular category of the vehicle. This reflects the “roadworthiness” of the car but doesn’t reflect or talk about the “crashworthiness” of the vehicle.
NCAP assessment gives a clear picture of the behaviour of the vehicle & the level of safety it will award to the occupant(s) when the vehicle will face an event of crash on-road.
Bharat NCAP frontal offset impact test is performed at 64km/h while the side impact test is performed at 50km/h & the pole side impact test is performed at 29km/h.
In Bharat NCAP, the assessment of the vehicle will be performed for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP) & Safety Assists Technologies (SAT).
